Appointment Details
Nick Adams has been appointed as US President Donald Trump's new special presidential envoy for American tourism, exceptionalism, and values. The role became effective on March 17, according to his updated biography on the US Department of State website.
Adams stated it was an "honor of a lifetime."
He was tasked with telling the story of American greatness.
The White House stated this new position aims to promote US attractions, national parks, and monuments.
Background and Past Political Career
Adams, an Australian-born conservative influencer, was born and raised in Australia and studied at the University of Sydney. His biography mentions little of his Australian background.
Australian Politics
Adams had a political career in Australia, representing the Liberal Party. In 2004, he was elected to the Ashfield council's north ward and became Australia's youngest-ever deputy mayor at age 21 a year later.
During his time on the council, Adams was noted for promoting hardline conservative views, including claims that multiculturalism divided society. He proposed unconventional ideas, such as eradicating pigeons during a bird flu scare in 2005 and DNA testing dog feces in 2008 to identify owners who did not clean up after their pets. Neither proposal was passed.
In 2006, Adams was formally condemned by colleagues for using council funds for personal benefit. The Liberal Party suspended him for six months in 2009 for verbally abusing a journalist. He resigned from local government in 2012.
US Political Involvement
Adams re-emerged in the US political sphere as a conservative influencer and commentator. Last year, he was nominated by President Trump to be the US ambassador to Malaysia. This nomination was not confirmed by the Senate and lapsed in February.
Adams confirmed he would be promoted to a new role, which is the current special envoy position.
