Thunderstorms Lash Dubai; Burj Khalifa Struck as Weather Brings Disruption

Intense thunderstorms and lightning affected parts of the Middle East, including Dubai. The world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, was struck by lightning on Thursday evening, March 26. Videos and images circulated online show lightning hitting the skyscraper, with footage suggesting the lightning was safely redirected through the building's protection system.

Weather Forecast and Anticipated Disruption

The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) had forecasted that the weather would begin affecting western regions on Thursday before moving inland and eastward. Heavy rainfall and turbulent conditions were anticipated to cause widespread disruption and travel delays in Dubai.

Dubai Issues Safety Warning

Dubai's Media Office issued a safety warning urging residents to exercise caution until Friday morning, March 27.

The warning advised against venturing out to sea, recommended caution while driving and reducing speed, and cautioned people to avoid valleys, flood-prone areas, and locations where rainwater might collect.

Regional Context: Missile Incidents Noted

Dubai's skyline has been far from peaceful amid the ongoing Middle East conflict. Since the outbreak of war, Dubai has been subjected to repeated attacks from Iran's missiles and drones, including strikes on the airport.

The most recent attack occurred as UAE air defences intercepted incoming missiles and drones from Iran during the early hours of Thursday morning.
