Android 17 Beta 3 Restores Single-Tap Wi-Fi Toggle

Android 17 Beta 3, released for eligible Pixel phones, has restored the ability to enable and disable a Wi-Fi connection with a single tap of the Quick Settings (QS) toggle. This change brings back a widely requested simplification to network controls.

Reverting Android 12's Two-Step Process

Since the introduction of Android 12, tapping the Wi-Fi QS tile previously opened a pop-up menu. This menu included options for nearby Wi-Fi networks, additional settings, and the crucial enable/disable toggle. This design change altered the Wi-Fi toggling process from a single step to a two-step interaction.

The return of this single-tap function reintroduces an option that was present for nearly a decade prior to Android 12's release.

New Wi-Fi Toggle Behavior by Tile Configuration

The updated functionality in Android 17 Beta 3 operates differently depending on how the Wi-Fi tile is configured in your Quick Settings panel:

For a 2x1 Quick Settings Tile:
  • Tapping the left Wi-Fi icon now directly toggles the onboard connection.
  • Tapping the right side of the tile, which displays the currently connected network, will continue to open the familiar pop-up menu.
  • When Wi-Fi is disabled, the text on this tile will indicate the availability of local networks.
For a 1x1 Quick Settings Tile:
  • A single tap on the 1x1 tile will toggle the Wi-Fi connection.
  • A long-press on this tile will open the full "Internet" section within the device's Settings menu.

This refined behavior aligns with the alteration made to the Bluetooth QS tile in Android 16 QPR1, enhancing consistency across Quick Settings controls.
