Android 17 Beta 3 Reinstates Single-Tap Wi-Fi Toggle in Quick Settings

Android 17 Beta 3 has been released for eligible Pixel devices, reintroducing the ability to toggle a Wi-Fi connection on or off with a single tap from the Quick Settings menu. This update effectively reverts a change implemented since Android 12, which had previously made the Wi-Fi toggle a two-step process.

The reintroduction of single-tap Wi-Fi functionality marks a return to a standard feature that was in place for approximately a decade before its alteration in Android 12.

Background: Evolution of Wi-Fi Toggling Functionality

Prior to the release of Android 12, users could enable or disable Wi-Fi directly from the Quick Settings tile with a single tap. This straightforward single-tap Wi-Fi function was a standard feature for approximately a decade.

With Android 12 and subsequent versions, tapping the Wi-Fi Quick Settings tile opened an intermediate pop-up menu. This menu displayed options for nearby Wi-Fi networks, additional settings, and the Wi-Fi enable/disable toggle. Consequently, managing the Wi-Fi connection required two steps.

New Functionality in Android 17 Beta 3

The updated behavior in Android 17 Beta 3 varies, depending on the configuration of the Wi-Fi Quick Settings tile in use.

2x1 Quick Settings Tile

When the Wi-Fi tile is displayed in a 2x1 format, tapping the left side, which contains the Wi-Fi icon, will directly toggle the Wi-Fi connection on or off. Tapping the right side of the tile, which typically displays the name of the currently connected network, will still open the pop-up menu that lists nearby networks and other options. If Wi-Fi is disabled, the text on the tile will indicate the availability of local networks.

1x1 Quick Settings Tile

For a 1x1 Wi-Fi tile, a single tap will toggle the Wi-Fi connection directly, without first opening the pop-up menu. A long-press on this tile will open the full "Internet" section within the device's main Settings menu.

Related Changes and Context

This reintroduction of single-tap functionality aligns with an alteration previously made to the Bluetooth Quick Settings tile in Android 16 QPR1. Additionally, Android 17 Beta 3 separates Wi-Fi and mobile data into distinct toggles, allowing for independent management of each setting.
