Tourist Helicopter Crashes on Kauai, Three Dead

A tourist helicopter crash on Kalalau Beach, a remote location on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, has resulted in three fatalities and two injuries. The incident occurred Thursday afternoon.

The crash involved one pilot and four passengers on Kauai's north shore.

Kalalau Beach is part of the scenic Na Pali Coast and is primarily accessible by hiking or boat, highlighting the remote nature of the crash site.

The two injured individuals were transported to Wilcox Medical Center for treatment.

Operator Identified

Authorities identified the helicopter as being operated by Airborne Aviation, a company that conducts sightseeing tours of Kauai's various natural landmarks.

Airborne Aviation offers a "doors-off thrill seekers adventure tour," with a capacity for up to four passengers.

Collaborative Response

Kauai Mayor Derek Kawakami acknowledged the collaborative response efforts. These efforts involved the U.S. Coast Guard, local police, fire, and safety agencies.

Popular but Risky Tours

Helicopter tours are a popular method for exploring the Na Pali Coast's cliffs, beaches, and waterfalls.

This latest incident follows a prior tour helicopter crash on Kauai in July 2024, which killed the pilot and two passengers. National Transportation Safety Board investigators determined that the previous crash broke up in-flight after encountering turbulence, causing the main rotor blades to strike the airframe.
