Google Gemini Launches New Import Features for Seamless User Migration

Google has launched new features for its Gemini AI platform, allowing users to import chat histories and contextual memory from other AI applications. These updates, rolling out alongside the Gemini 3.1 Flash Live update, are designed to facilitate user migration and simplify the adoption of Gemini by enabling the direct transfer of personal data and conversation logs.

The new functionalities, referred to as "switching tools," aim to reduce the need for users to extensively retrain Gemini with their personal information and preferences. They encompass two primary capabilities: chat history import and memory import.

Feature Overview: Streamlining AI Adoption

Gemini's latest updates focus on making the transition for users from other AI platforms as smooth as possible. By allowing direct data transfer, Gemini significantly reduces the initial setup and "training" time for new users.

Chat History Import: Bringing Conversations to Gemini

Users can now import their past AI conversations directly into Gemini. This is achieved by uploading .zip files containing exported data from other AI applications.

  • Supported Platforms: Google specifically supports imports from ChatGPT and Claude.
  • File Specifications: Users can upload .zip files with a maximum size of 5 GB. A limit of five .zip files can be uploaded per day.
Exporting Data from Other Platforms:
  • For ChatGPT: Users can export data by navigating to their username (bottom left), selecting "Settings," then "Data controls," and choosing "Export data."
  • For Claude: Users can export data by clicking their username, going to "Settings," then "Privacy," and selecting "Export data." Users then choose the desired data range, and a download link for the data is sent to the email associated with their account.
Management within Gemini:

Imported conversations are displayed in the standard Gemini side panel, identifiable by an import chat icon. Users have options to search for and delete specific conversations.

To remove all conversations from a particular import, users can locate the import entry and select the corresponding delete option. Re-uploading a .zip file integrates any new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones from that file. This functionality allows users to continue past conversations and search through their imported logs within Gemini.

Memory Import: Personalizing Gemini Instantly

The memory import feature enables the transfer of contextual information, allowing Gemini to quickly learn user-specific details.

  • Process: Gemini suggests a prompt that users can input into their current chat application. The resulting summary, which may contain details about the user's interests, relationships, and personal background, is then copied and pasted into Gemini.
  • Purpose: This process allows Gemini to quickly integrate key user details, reducing the need for the system to learn user context from the beginning.

Access and Availability

To access these import functionalities, users can select the "Settings & help" gear icon within Gemini and choose the "Import memory to Gemini" option, or directly visit gemini.google.com/import.

This import functionality is currently unavailable to users located in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, or the United Kingdom.

Market Context: Competing for AI Users

The introduction of these features occurs amidst a competitive landscape within the AI chatbot market. OpenAI's ChatGPT has recently reported 900 million weekly active users. Gemini, according to Alphabet's fourth-quarter earnings call, surpassed 750 million monthly active users. This strategic enhancement aims to improve Gemini's user acquisition by facilitating easier transitions for users from other platforms.
