G7 Foreign Ministers Discuss Iran Conflict and International Stability

Foreign ministers from the Group of 7 (G7) industrialized democracies convened in France on Thursday, aiming to establish a unified approach with the United States to conclude the war in Iran.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized the necessity for intensive discussions to develop joint solutions, despite the current situation's challenges.

The meeting, held in Cernay-la-Ville near Paris, marks the first gathering of G7 foreign ministers since the US and Israel initiated the war against Iran on February 28. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is scheduled to join the summit on Friday.

Following initial discussions on the Middle East conflict with British and French counterparts, Yvette Cooper and Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister Wadephul highlighted several key priorities.

Wadephul stressed the importance of preventing further destabilization, protecting economic freedom, and creating pathways for both ending the fighting and managing the subsequent period.

Wadephul affirmed the significance of Secretary Rubio's attendance, expressing optimism that a common position could be established to achieve a swift and lasting resolution to the conflict.

Broader Agenda

The two-day meeting's agenda is also expected to include discussions on reconstruction efforts. These topics specifically include the damaged containment structure at the Chernobyl nuclear plant and strategies to combat drug trafficking in Syria.

This event is the first formal foreign minister meeting under France's 2026 G7 presidency. France seeks tangible outcomes from the talks regarding major international crises. Additionally, representatives from Brazil, South Korea, India, and Saudi Arabia have been invited for individual discussions.
