2026 FIFA Men's World Cup: The Tournament So Far

The 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, features 48 teams for the first time. The qualification process for the final six spots concluded with a series of UEFA and inter-confederation playoff matches. The tournament has since commenced, featuring record-breaking performances from Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and other players.

Qualification Finals: Four UEFA Spots and Inter-Confederation Berths Decided

UEFA Playoff Results

The final four European qualifiers were determined through winner-takes-all matches on April 1.

Path A:

  • Bosnia and Herzegovina qualified after a 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Italy (match ended 1-1 after extra time). This marks Italy's third consecutive World Cup absence. Bosnia and Herzegovina will join Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland in Group B.

Path B:

  • Sweden defeated Poland 3-2 to secure a World Cup berth. Sweden will compete in Group F alongside the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia.

Path C:

  • Türkiye qualified with a 1-0 victory over Kosovo. Türkiye will join the United States, Paraguay, and Australia in Group D.

Path D:

  • Czechia qualified after a 3-1 penalty shootout win over Denmark (match ended 2-2 after extra time). Czechia will play in Group A with Mexico, South Africa, and South Korea.

Inter-Confederation Playoff Results

Two final spots were decided at a tournament in Mexico.

Pathway 1:

  • Jamaica defeated New Caledonia in the semi-final. DR Congo, the highest-ranked team in the pathway, advanced directly to the final. The winner of this pathway joins Colombia, Portugal, and Uzbekistan in Group K.

Pathway 2:

  • Iraq defeated Bolivia in the final. Iraq, coached by former Socceroos manager Graham Arnold, advanced automatically as the second-highest ranked team in the pathway before defeating Bolivia. The winner joins France, Senegal, and Norway in Group I.

Messi Breaks All-Time World Cup Scoring Record

Lionel Messi scored two goals in Argentina's 2-0 victory over Austria on June 22, bringing his World Cup career total to 18 goals. This surpasses the previous record of 16 goals held by Miroslav Klose.

Messi previously scored a hat-trick in Argentina's 3-0 win over Algeria in their opening match, tying Klose's record.

Record milestones:

  • Messi (38) became the oldest player to score a hat-trick at a World Cup.
  • He has scored in six consecutive World Cup matches, tying a record held by Just Fontaine and Jairzinho.
  • He holds the record for most World Cup matches played (28) and is Argentina's all-time leading scorer (122 goals).
