HBO Orders Second Season of "Harry Potter" Series Ahead of Premiere
HBO has ordered a second season of its upcoming "Harry Potter" television series, well before the first season has even aired. The first season, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, is scheduled to debut on Christmas Day 2026 on HBO and HBO Max. The network has also released the first teaser trailer and provided new details on casting, production, and the creative team.
Season 2 Renewal and Production Schedule
HBO has officially ordered a second season of the "Harry Potter" television series. The second season will adapt Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Filming for Season 2 is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2025, prior to the December 2026 premiere of Season 1.
Jon Brown, a writer on Season 1 who previously worked on HBO's Succession, has been promoted to co-showrunner for Season 2. He will join Season 1 showrunner Francesca Gardiner. Gardiner stated that the overlapping production schedules necessitated the addition of a co-showrunner.
HBO and HBO Max Content CEO Casey Bloys stated in November 2024 that writing for Season 2 had already begun, noting the intent to minimize the gap between seasons due to the young cast's aging and the show's complex production requirements.
Season 1 Premiere and Episode Details
The first season, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, will consist of eight episodes, each approximately one hour long. The series is scheduled to premiere globally on HBO and HBO Max on December 25, 2026—earlier than a previously projected timeline of 2027.
The first teaser trailer for the series was released on March 25. It features scenes of Harry Potter's early life, including his time with Aunt Petunia Dursley, his receipt of a Hogwarts letter, and his interactions with Rubeus Hagrid, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.

The series is produced by HBO in association with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Production is taking place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K.
Plot Synopsis
The first season will chronicle the story of 11-year-old Harry Potter, who discovers he is a wizard and receives an admittance letter to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He encounters a hidden world of magic, friendship, and adventure, and is forced to face a dangerous enemy from his past.
Sources indicate that the first season will include scenes not present in the original books, such as Hermione Granger receiving her Hogwarts letter and expanded depictions of Draco Malfoy's home life.
Rights and Adaptation Plan
HBO plans to adapt all seven of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books into seven seasons over approximately a decade, with each season covering one book. The series aims to provide a more detailed adaptation of the source material.
Casting Reactions and Security
Paapa Essiedu, cast as Severus Snape, has reported receiving racist insults and threats following his casting. Bloys confirmed that a security team is in place for actors involved in major productions, anticipating potential issues due to passionate fan bases.
John Lithgow stated he faced pressure to withdraw from the role due to J.K. Rowling's involvement as executive producer, stemming from her public views on trans rights. Casey Bloys has previously commented on Rowling's personal views, stating they are separate from the series content.
Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter in the original film franchise, expressed his belief that Dominic McLaughlin would perform well in the lead role.
