First Look at "Dune: Part Three" Revealed Ahead of 2026 Release

A first look at "Dune: Part Three," the final installment in director Denis Villeneuve's trilogy, has been released. The film, an adaptation of Frank Herbert's 1969 novel Dune Messiah, is scheduled for theatrical debut on December 18, 2026.

Production and Development

Director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that Dune: Part Three will be his final film in the franchise. He describes the first two films as a diptych completing the adaptation of the first book, and views the third film as a distinct entity.

Villeneuve indicated that while he initially planned to direct a different project after Dune: Part Two, the positive audience reception to the 2024 release influenced his decision to proceed with the third installment earlier than planned.

The film is currently in post-production, with visual effects being finalized. Villeneuve noted the movie was shot primarily on 65mm and IMAX film, with digital IMAX used for certain desert scenes.

Plot and Setting

The story is set approximately 17 years after the events of Dune: Part Two. It follows Paul Atreides as he grapples with the consequences of becoming Emperor, initiating a holy war, and marrying Princess Irulan for political reasons—which leads to Chani's departure.

The narrative explores Paul's attempts to break a cycle of violence. Villeneuve has described the film's tone as a "thriller," characterizing it as more action-packed, tense, and "muscular" than the previous installments.

The returning ensemble cast includes:

  • Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides
  • Zendaya as Chani

Released first-look photos show Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides with visual changes including wrinkles and red scarring around his eyes.

A teaser trailer shown at an event included scenes of Paul and Chani discussing baby names, Paul seeking counsel from his mother, and key characters like Stilgar and Alia.

The footage concluded with Paul preparing for battle and provided a first look at Robert Pattinson as Scytale.
