UConn Secures 25th Final Four Bid, Extends Winning Streak to 54

The UConn women's basketball team has secured its 25th appearance in the NCAA Final Four following a 70-52 victory over Notre Dame in the Fort Worth Regional 1 final. This win extends UConn's overall winning streak to 54 consecutive games and positions the team to pursue its 13th national championship in Phoenix. The Huskies previously concluded the 2025-26 regular season with an undefeated record through 34 games.

With this victory, UConn is now set to pursue its 13th national championship, riding an impressive 54-game winning streak.

Elite Eight Regional Final Against Notre Dame

In the Elite Eight matchup on Sunday, UConn defeated sixth-seeded Notre Dame 70-52. Freshman Blanca QuiƱonez led UConn's scoring with 20 points, including 14 in the first half. All-American Sarah Strong contributed 21 points, with 10 scored in the fourth quarter. Azzi Fudd added 13 points and four assists, securing 7 points in the final frame.

Notre Dame's Hannah Hidalgo led her team with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Hidalgo also set new NCAA single-season records for steals with 202 and NCAA tournament steals with 29, though she recorded five turnovers during the game.

UConn established a double-digit lead in the second quarter, reaching 30-20. The team experienced a nearly five-minute scoring drought in the third quarter, missing 11 consecutive shots, but Notre Dame was unable to reduce the deficit to less than eight points during this period. This marked the ninth NCAA tournament meeting between the two programs and the first time a Final Four spot was at stake.

UConn's Season Performance and Historical Context

Prior to the NCAA tournament, UConn maintained an undefeated record through 34 games during the 2025-26 season. Head coach Geno Auriemma noted the team's consistent performance throughout the season. Historically, UConn has achieved an undefeated season in 6 out of 10 instances where a program has done so under coaches Geno Auriemma and Chris Dailey. The Huskies lead the country in several statistical categories, including scoring differential, shooting percentage, assists per game, assist-to-turnover ratio, and defensive rating.

UConn's dominance is evident in its historical record of achieving 6 out of 10 undefeated seasons ever recorded in women's basketball.

Identified Challenges and Opponent Strategies

UConn's regular season schedule did not include matchups against other No. 1 seeds, and only one other tournament team emerged from the Big East conference. In contrast, other major conferences had at least eight teams qualify for the tournament.

Potential areas of challenge for UConn, as noted during the season, include:

3-Point Defense

UConn's defense primarily protects the paint, which can lead opponents to attempt a high volume of 3-pointers, averaging 25.1 attempts conceded per game. While UConn generally maintains its base defense, some teams have leveraged hot outside shooting. Examples include Michigan, which nearly achieved a comeback by shooting 8 of 14 from beyond the arc, and Villanova, which held a halftime lead by making seven 3-pointers. Twelve tournament teams attempt at least 25 three-pointers per game. Vanderbilt, a potential regional final opponent, ranks 24th nationally in 3-point attempts and 9th in 3-point makes, converting 36.4 percent of their tries.

Full-Court Pressure and Turnovers

Opponents have also employed defensive pressure to force turnovers. Tennessee found success for approximately one half by forcing 10 turnovers in the first 20 minutes against UConn's average of 12.6 per game. Ohio State, a potential Elite Eight opponent, previously forced 25 turnovers in a Sweet 16 matchup. Texas, another potential tough opponent, forces 22.7 turnovers per game.

UCLA, considered the second-best team in the country, has also been noted for its potential to challenge UConn. While UCLA typically focuses on interior defense, the addition of perimeter talent like Charlisse Leger-Walker and Gianna Kneepkens (44.2% 3-point shooter) could enhance their offensive capabilities.

Upcoming Matchup

UConn is scheduled to play on Friday in Phoenix against the winner of the Elite Eight game between top-seeded South Carolina and third-seeded TCU.
