Kimi Antonelli Secures Consecutive Grand Prix Wins in China and Japan, Becomes Youngest F1 Championship Leader
Kimi Antonelli has secured two consecutive Grand Prix victories at the 2026 Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix, marking his first and second career Formula One victories. Following his win in Japan, Antonelli, at 19 years old, became the youngest driver to lead the Formula One World Championship standings.
2026 Chinese Grand Prix: Maiden Victory
Kimi Antonelli, driving for Mercedes, secured his maiden Formula One Grand Prix victory at the 2026 Chinese Grand Prix. Starting from pole position, the 19-year-old converted it into his first career win. His teammate George Russell finished second, achieving a Mercedes one-two finish. Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari finished third, marking his first podium with the team, with Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) finishing fourth.
Race ProgressionAntonelli briefly lost the lead to Hamilton at Turn 1 at the start of the race but reclaimed it on the following lap. Charles Leclerc also moved ahead of Russell initially. A Safety Car was deployed on lap 10 due to Lance Stroll's Aston Martin stopping on track with a suspected battery issue. Pit stops under the Safety Car period led to a temporary reshuffling of positions.
After the restart, Antonelli extended his lead, maintaining a gap of over seven seconds at one point, despite experiencing a late lock-up at Turn 14 with three laps remaining. George Russell advanced past both Ferraris by lap 29 to secure second place. Hamilton prevailed over Leclerc on lap 40 to take third position.
Points Scorers (4th-10th)The drivers finishing from fourth to tenth place and scoring points were:
- 4th: Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
- 5th: Ollie Bearman (Haas)
- 6th: Pierre Gasly (Alpine)
- 7th: Liam Lawson (Red Bull)
- 8th: Isack Hadjar (Red Bull)
- 9th: Carlos Sainz (Williams) – marking Williams' first points of the year.
- 10th: Franco Colapinto (Alpine) – securing his first point for the team.
Esteban Ocon (Alpine) finished 13th after receiving a 10-second penalty for a collision with Colapinto.
Retirements and Non-StartersA total of seven drivers did not finish or start the race. Both McLaren cars, driven by Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, were unable to start due to identified electrical and powertrain issues approximately one hour before the Grand Prix. Both Williams drivers, Alex Albon and Gabriel Bortoleto, also did not start.
During the race, Lance Stroll's Aston Martin stalled, and his teammate Fernando Alonso retired due to reported vibration problems, stating he lost feeling in his hands. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) also retired his car on lap 46 due to electronic/power unit issues.
2026 Japanese Grand Prix: Second Consecutive Victory and Championship Lead
Kimi Antonelli secured his second consecutive victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, also held in 2026. This win propelled him to the lead of the Formula One World Championship standings, making him the youngest driver in F1 history to achieve this after three races, at 19 years, six months, and 28 days old.
QualifyingAntonelli had secured pole position for the Japanese Grand Prix, marking his second consecutive pole position. Mercedes achieved a one-two finish in qualifying. Oscar Piastri (McLaren) qualified third, Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) fourth, Lando Norris (McLaren) fifth, and Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) sixth. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) was eliminated during the second part of qualifying, starting 11th.
Race EventsThe race commenced after a short delay for barrier repairs following a crash in a support category. Antonelli experienced wheel-spin at the start, causing him to drop from pole position to sixth. Oscar Piastri moved from third on the grid to lead by Turn 1, with Charles Leclerc also passing Antonelli to take second place. Lando Norris also made a strong start, overtaking George Russell.
Antonelli subsequently regained positions. A Safety Car period was initiated mid-race following a high-speed collision involving Haas driver Ollie Bearman, who sustained a right knee contusion but was alert and communicating, with initial X-rays showing no fractures. The timing of the Safety Car allowed Antonelli, who had not yet pitted, to make a pit stop without losing significant track position, effectively providing him with a "free pit-stop." This allowed him to take the lead from Piastri, who had already pitted. George Russell's race strategy was impacted by the Safety Car deployment, and he later lost positions to Hamilton and Leclerc as he managed his car's energy. Antonelli completed the final 25 laps to secure the victory.
Final PositionsThe top eight finishers were:
- 1st: Kimi Antonelli (Mercedes)
- 2nd: Oscar Piastri (McLaren)
- 3rd: Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)
- 4th: George Russell (Mercedes)
- 5th: Lando Norris (McLaren)
- 6th: Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari)
- 7th: Pierre Gasly (Alpine)
- 8th: Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – who started 11th.
Antonelli now holds a nine-point lead over George Russell in the Formula One World Championship standings. McLaren's performance, with both cars finishing in the top six, represented their strongest result of the season. The Formula One season is scheduled to continue with the Miami Grand Prix on May 3, following the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races.
