Apple's 50th Anniversary: Reflecting on the Past, Building the Future
Apple has commemorated its 50th anniversary with internal and external initiatives, while simultaneously releasing previously announced products and continuing to develop software updates. Reports from multiple sources indicate the company is exploring significant future product developments, including a foldable iPhone, "Ultra"-class devices, and advancements in its smart home and display technologies.
Apple's 50th Anniversary Celebrations
Apple marked its 50th anniversary with various activities. CEO Tim Cook issued a letter titled "50 Years of Thinking Different," reflecting on the company's history and values. A new "Hello Apple" Instagram account was launched for company news and marketing purposes. Journalist David Pogue published a book detailing Apple's first five decades.
Public celebrations included a musical appearance by Alicia Keys at the Grand Central Terminal store in New York City. The anniversary events culminated in a party at Apple Park, which featured a concert by Paul McCartney. Employees received commemorative t-shirts, enamel pins, and limited-edition posters.
Recent Product Releases
Seven new Apple products, previously announced, were officially released this week. These products are now available in Apple Stores globally for both walk-in purchases and online pickup, with availability subject to store stock. In March, the company unveiled products such as the MacBook Neo and announced the discontinuation of the Mac Pro.
Software Updates
Apple is continuing testing of iOS 26.4, with Beta 4 released to developers and public testers. This update includes new emoji characters and support for the new iPhone 17e and M4 iPad Air models. Following the release of iOS 26.4, developer betas for iOS 26.5 and macOS Tahoe 26.5 were subsequently released.
A revamped Siri, powered by Apple Intelligence, was not included in iOS 26.4 and is now anticipated for iOS 27. The current iOS 26.5 update contains various changes.
Upcoming Product Developments
Reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and other sources suggest several new Apple products and technologies are in development:
Foldable iPhone
Apple's first foldable iPhone is anticipated to represent a significant overhaul in the iPhone's history. This device is expected to feature a design that opens like a book, providing a large internal screen. It is projected to operate as a hybrid device running iOS, supporting side-by-side execution of two iPhone applications on its internal display, which may approximate the size of an iPad mini.
Apple is reportedly redesigning its apps to incorporate sidebars for this mode, with third-party developers expected to adapt their applications. However, the foldable iPhone is not expected to offer the full multitasking capabilities of iPadOS or directly run iPad-optimized applications. iOS 27 is projected to include optimizations for side-by-side app functionality.
The device is expected to have an estimated price of over $2,000 and may be unveiled in September alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models, though shipment delays of a few months are possible.
"Ultra"-Class Devices and MacBook Pro
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple plans to launch at least three new "Ultra"-class devices this year. These may include:
- The aforementioned foldable iPhone.
- Higher-end AirPods Pro models featuring infrared cameras.
- A premium MacBook Pro with a touchscreen OLED display, potentially positioned above current MacBook Pro models.
Smart Home Devices
Information from leaker Kosutami suggests Apple's upcoming "HomePad" could feature a magnetic snap-to-wall capability, similar to MagSafe, along with doorbell integration. The device is expected to heavily utilize Apple Intelligence.
Due to reported delays with Apple Intelligence-powered Siri, the launch of the HomePad, along with updated Apple TV and HomePod models, may not occur until the fall.
iMac Display Technology
Apple is reportedly planning an iMac featuring an OLED panel with increased brightness, according to ZDNet Korea. The company has requested 24-inch OLED panel samples from suppliers such as Samsung Display and LG Display. These panels are specified to have 600 nits of brightness and approximately 218 pixels-per-inch (PPI), which would be an increase from the current iMac's 500 nits LCD display, while maintaining the same PPI.
iPhone 18 Pro Features
New images, shared by X user @earlyappleleaks, depicted an alleged iPhone 18 Pro prototype and screen protectors. These images suggest a smaller Dynamic Island compared to current models. The prototype reportedly features a small circular punch-hole cutout under the display, potentially indicating a relocated Face ID sensor.
