Auto SR for Xbox Ally X: Launching April 2026
Automatic Super Resolution (Auto SR), a highly anticipated feature for many Xbox users, is scheduled to launch in April 2026 for Xbox Ally X devices. Details regarding the feature were recently presented at GDC.
What is Auto SR?
Auto SR is Microsoft's proprietary AI upscaling solution, functioning similarly to established technologies like Nvidia's DLSS or AMD's FSR.
Its primary purpose is to enhance game visuals by allowing them to run at lower native resolutions, thereby optimizing hardware performance.
Exclusive to Xbox Ally X
For the Xbox Ally X, Auto SR will leverage the device's Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This NPU is powered by AMD's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chipset, processors specifically engineered for AI and machine learning tasks.
Critically, the base model Xbox Ally lacks the necessary NPU cores, making Auto SR exclusive to the Xbox Ally X.
Boosting Game Performance
Xbox Ally X users experiencing performance challenges in games will be able to employ Auto SR. This feature will upscale games from resolutions like 720p to 1080p or higher, starting in April 2026.
OS-Level Implementation
Unlike competing solutions such as DLSS and FSR, which typically require direct integration by game developers, Auto SR operates seamlessly at the operating system level.
Microsoft's documentation confirms that Auto SR currently supports games utilizing both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12.
Performance Outlook
Previous testing conducted in 2024 by Digital Foundry indicated that Auto SR delivered improved image quality compared to native resolution in certain scenarios, although it did not quite match Nvidia's DLSS at that time.
However, a more recent Microsoft showcase reported a significant 30% performance increase, suggesting substantial improvements and ongoing development since those earlier tests.
