Vikings Sign Kyler Murray, Creating QB Competition
The Minnesota Vikings have signed veteran quarterback Kyler Murray to a one-year contract, creating a competition for the starting position with third-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy.
The move follows Murray's release from the Arizona Cardinals, where he spent the first seven seasons of his career.
Contract and Roster Context
Kyler Murray signed a one-year deal with the Vikings for the veteran minimum salary of $1.3 million for the 2026 season. His previous team, the Arizona Cardinals, will pay the remainder of the $36.8 million he was owed due to offset language in his contract.
The Vikings' front office sought an experienced former starter to provide competition and insurance at the quarterback position. The low financial commitment also assists the team in managing a salary-cap deficit reported to exceed $40 million.
Murray's Career and Fit with Vikings
- Arizona drafted Murray with the first overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year that season.
- As a starter for the Cardinals, he compiled a 38-48-1 record, was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2021, and surpassed 3,000 passing yards in four different seasons.
- His tenure included one playoff appearance, a wild-card loss in the 2021 season.
- In his final season with Arizona, Murray played in five games due to a foot injury, recording 962 passing yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions.
During his introductory press conference, Murray stated he was a fan of the Vikings as a child. He cited Head Coach Kevin O’Connell’s offensive system, the existing roster of players, and the defense coordinated by Brian Flores as reasons for viewing Minnesota as a strong fit.
Coach O’Connell has highlighted Murray's accuracy, fundamentals, and experience operating from within an NFL pocket.
A noted challenge will be integrating Murray's playmaking style, which differs from the Vikings' established offensive system.
Impact on Quarterback J.J. McCarthy
The signing creates direct competition for J.J. McCarthy, the 10th overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. In his first two seasons, McCarthy has dealt with several injuries, including a meniscus tear, hand injuries, a high ankle sprain, and a concussion, alongside on-field challenges.
Wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who has worked with McCarthy since last season, stated he observed McCarthy is "a lot more confident" than a year ago. Regarding the new competition, Jefferson said:
"For somebody to enter that room with that type of ability... he's got to step it up a little bit... So it's all about who's ready for that moment."
Jefferson also noted Murray's ability to make "big, exciting plays" and said he looks forward to Murray's speed, quickness, and arm strength.
Outlook and Competition
Kyler Murray has indicated his readiness to compete for the starting role, primarily with McCarthy. The Vikings have not yet named a starting quarterback for Week 1 of the upcoming season. The organization has stated the move is intended to motivate McCarthy's development while providing experienced depth at the position.
