Microsoft Rolling Out 'Xbox Mode' to All Windows 11 PCs Next Month

Microsoft plans to roll out an "Xbox mode" to all Windows 11 PCs, including tablets, starting next month. This feature, officially named “Xbox full screen experience,” is currently available for Windows 11 gaming handhelds such as the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X.

Key Features and Purpose

Microsoft attributes the expansion of the mode to PCs as a method for gamers to interact with a Windows 11 PC, particularly due to its controller-friendly design. Ian LeGrow, Microsoft’s Corporate VP for Windows and Devices, emphasized the benefits in a blog post:

“Xbox mode makes it easier for players to jump into a streamlined, full‑screen, dedicated gaming experience whenever they want to lean back and play.”

The "Xbox full screen experience" was initially offered to beta testers in the Windows Insiders program in November.

Activating and Using Xbox Mode

Users can activate the mode by pressing the Windows logo key + G to open the Game Bar overlay, then navigating to Settings to activate "Enter full screen experience." Alternatively, pressing the Windows logo key + F11 will toggle the mode.

Upon activation, the desktop transforms into the Xbox home screen. This interface displays Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass and other PC games, including those from alternative storefronts like Valve's Steam.

Players can navigate and select games or applications using a controller and can also run and switch between multiple games.

To revert to the desktop, users can select the Windows desktop option from Task View, exit via Game Bar settings, or press the Windows key on the keyboard, without requiring a system reboot.

Availability Details

Microsoft intends to offer Xbox mode in “select markets,” with the United States included in the initial launch group.
