Warner Bros. Announces "Practical Magic 2"

Warner Bros. has announced production on "Practical Magic 2," a sequel to the 1998 romantic fantasy film. The studio released a teaser trailer at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas.

The film reunites original stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman and is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release in September 2026.

Production and Development

The sequel is based on Alice Hoffman's 2021 novel The Book of Magic, the fourth book in the Practical Magic series. The original 1998 film was based on Hoffman's 1995 novel.

The screenplay for the sequel is written by Akiva Goldsman and Georgia Pritchett. Goldsman co-wrote the original film.

Susanne Bier is directing the film, a change from the original, which was directed by Griffin Dunne. Nicole Kidman, who is also a producer on the project, confirmed in an interview that ensuring a female director was a key production change she implemented.

The film is produced by Denise Di Novi, Sandra Bullock, and Nicole Kidman. Executive producers are Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Donald Sabourin, and Alice Hoffman.

Cast

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman will reprise their roles as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. Original cast members Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing will return as Aunt Jet and Aunt Franny Owens.

New cast members include:

  • Joey King and Maisie Williams as Sally's adult daughters, Kylie and Antonia.
  • Lee Pace as a character named Harlan Vex.
  • Xolo MaridueƱa and Solly McLeod in unspecified roles.

Story Details

According to a studio description, the film returns to the world of the Owens family, a multi-generational family of witches who have been under a centuries-old curse that prevents them from finding lasting love.

The story follows the sisters as they attempt to break the curse, which involves confronting family secrets and making sacrifices.

The narrative includes Sally navigating her daughters' adult lives and an assignment involving Lee Pace's character that takes the sisters from their New England town.

Release and Promotion

The first official teaser trailer for the film was unveiled, generating significant online discussion. The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release.

Sources report differing dates, with some stating September 11, 2026, and others September 18, 2026. Warner Bros. has not clarified the discrepancy.

In promotion, Sandra Bullock posted a video related to the film on a new Instagram account. Nicole Kidman has stated that a famous "midnight margaritas" scene from the original film will be featured in the sequel.
