Apple's MacBook Neo: Sales Revisions and Future Tech Roadmap
Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revised sales projections for Apple's MacBook Neo and provided updates on future MacBook models, particularly concerning the integration of touchscreen technology and OLED displays. Simultaneously, reports from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman offer additional insights into Apple's strategy for touch-enabled Macs and the MacBook Neo's current market position.
MacBook Neo: Overview and Revised Sales Forecast
The MacBook Neo was initially described by Kuo in June of the previous year as featuring an approximate 13-inch display and an A18 Pro processor. Its specifications, including color options such as silver, indigo, blush, and citrus, aligned with the released product. The device is currently available on Amazon, with the 256GB SSD model priced at $599 and the 512GB version at $699; a 1TB model has also been mentioned as a possible variant.
Kuo has adjusted his sales forecast for the MacBook Neo, reducing the 2026 estimate from an initial 5-7 million units to between 4.5 and 5 million units. Approximately 2 to 2.5 million units are anticipated to be sold in the first half of 2026. Quanta currently serves as the exclusive assembler for the MacBook Neo, with Foxconn potentially joining assembly operations in the future. Luxshare is also reportedly seeking to secure future assembly business.
Touchscreen Development for MacBooks
Apple is reportedly planning to integrate touchscreens into some portable Mac models by the end of this year. However, the MacBook Neo is not expected to feature this functionality for at least the next three years.
Kuo had previously suggested that a MacBook Neo 2 might include a touchscreen, with a projected launch in 2027. This assessment was later revised, with Kuo citing increased production costs as a contributing factor. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg supports this view, stating that he does not anticipate touchscreens being added to the MacBook Neo series within the next three years. Gurman also noted that Apple made specific design adjustments to MacBook Neo components to achieve its starting price of $599.
Future Touchscreen and OLED Implementations
The first Apple touchscreen MacBook is now anticipated to be an Ultra premium model. Within the broader MacBook lineup, touchscreen functionality is currently expected to be exclusive to the M6 MacBook Pro family, specifically the M6 Pro and M6 Max variants.
Regarding OLED display technology, a significant MacBook Pro upgrade featuring OLED touch panels is expected to arrive in "late 4Q26 or early 1Q27." While the MacBook Air is considered a more probable candidate for touchscreen technology, its transition to OLED displays is not expected for another two years. A MacBook Air revision incorporating OLED panels is predicted to launch "around 2028 or 2029."
