Google Expands Gemini AI Assistant in Chrome to New Regions and Languages

Google has broadened the reach of its Gemini AI assistant within the Chrome browser, making it available in several new countries and adding support for over 50 languages. The integrated feature, which connects to various Google services, is now accessible on desktop and iOS platforms in the newly added regions.

The Gemini in Chrome feature first launched in the United States in January 2024, with expansions to Canada, India, and New Zealand following in March.

On the date of the most recent announcement, Google expanded the feature to seven additional markets in the Asia-Pacific region: Australia, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Vietnam.

Platform and Language Availability

  • Platforms: The feature is available on Chromebook Plus, Mac, and Windows desktop browsers. Support has also been expanded to include the Chrome browser on iOS devices (iPhone and iPad). It is currently unavailable on Android devices.
  • Regional Exception: In Japan, the feature is available on desktop but is not yet available on iOS.
  • Languages: Support has been added for over 50 additional languages.

How to Access and Core Functions

Users can access Gemini in Chrome through multiple methods:

  • Clicking an "Ask Gemini" icon in the browser's toolbar or top-right corner.
  • Using keyboard shortcuts.
  • Accessing it from the Mac menu bar or the Windows system tray.

The assistant appears as a floating window or a docked side panel. It can utilize context from the user's current browser tab and, on computers, from up to 10 open tabs. Core functions include summarizing web pages, clarifying concepts, and answering questions.

Integration with Google Services

The feature integrates with several Google applications, allowing users to:

  • Draft and send emails via Gmail directly from the side panel.
  • Schedule meetings and organize Google Calendar.
  • Check location details with Google Maps.
  • Access content from Google Drive, Docs, Search, and YouTube.
  • According to one source, it can also connect to Google Photos and Google Flights.

For sensitive actions like sending an email or adding a calendar event, user confirmation is required.

Additional Features and Context

  • The sidebar provides access to Google's image generator, Nano Banana 2, which can transform images on the web.
  • Users can interact with the assistant via text or voice input.
  • The feature activates only when a user chooses to use it, and activity with Gemini Apps can be managed, deleted, or turned off. As the tool is linked to a Google account, it can access data from the user's online and Google activity.
  • Some advanced agentic features, described as controlling browser windows to complete tasks like booking appointments, are in testing. These features are currently only available to users of AI Pro and AI Ultra paid plans in the United States.
  • Users can remove the shortcut icon by right-clicking and unpinning it from the toolbar.
