NFL Announces 2026 Salary Cap Amidst Legal Tampering Period

The National Football League has established the 2026 salary cap at $301.2 million. This announcement sets a new financial benchmark for teams as they navigate the current offseason.

The league's decision coincides with the ongoing legal tampering period, a critical two-day window during which teams can negotiate with pending free agents. Any agreements reached during this period will become official when the new league year officially commences on Wednesday, March 11th, at 4 PM. Teams across the league are actively shaping their rosters in anticipation of the upcoming season.

Washington Commanders Roster Overhaul Underway

Following a challenging 5-12 season, the Washington Commanders have been particularly active during this pivotal period. The team previously appointed David Blough as offensive coordinator and Daronte Jones as defensive coordinator, signaling a strategic shift. A stated focus for the franchise is the development of quarterback Jayden Daniels and the comprehensive rebuilding of the defensive unit.

New Free Agent Acquisitions

The Commanders have reached agreements with several players from other teams, aiming to bolster key positions:

  • DE Odafe Oweh: Agreed to a 4-year, $100 million deal.
  • DT Tim Settle: Agreed to a 3-year, $24 million deal, marking his return to Washington.
  • CB Amik Robertson: Agreed to a 2-year deal.

Key Player Re-signings

Washington has also moved to secure talent already on its roster, extending or signing new deals for several existing players:

  • LT Laremy Tunsil: Signed a 2-year, $60.2 million extension.
  • QB Marcus Mariota: Re-signed for 1 year.
  • P Tress Way: Re-signed for 1 year.

  • DE Drake Jackson: Re-signed for 1 year.

Notable Player Releases

To create cap space and adjust the roster, the Commanders have released the following players:

  • C Tyler Biadasz: Subsequently signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.
  • CB Marshon Lattimore: His release resulted in a maximum of $18.5 million in cap savings for the team.

The Commanders currently have two players whose futures are pending as restricted free agents:

  • RB Chris Rodriguez Jr.
  • TE Tyree Jackson
