Royal Family Gathers for Commonwealth Day Service Amid Andrew's Arrest Fallout
The Prince and Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton and Prince William, joined King Charles and other senior royals at the annual Commonwealth Day service held at Westminster Abbey in London on March 9. This public gathering marked their first joint appearance with King Charles since the arrest of former Prince Andrew in February.
Royal Arrivals and Greetings
Kate Middleton and Prince William arrived in coordinating blue attire. Inside the Abbey, Princess Kate greeted King Charles with a curtsy and a kiss. Other attendees included Queen Camilla, Princess Anne, Vice Admiral Sir Tim Laurence, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, and Prince Albert of Monaco.

Andrew's Absence and Recent Developments
Prince Andrew, who stepped back from royal duties in 2019 following links to Jeffrey Epstein, was not present at the service. In October 2025, King Charles announced that Andrew's royal titles and honors would be stripped, and he would lose his lease at Royal Lodge. Andrew was arrested on February 19, his 66th birthday, at Wood Farm on the Sandringham estate, facing allegations of misconduct in public office. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein.
Anti-Monarchy Protests OutsideOutside Westminster Abbey, anti-monarchy protestors gathered with signs referencing Andrew's legal issues, including phrases like "What did you know?" and "Charles, what are you hiding?"
Highlights of the Service
The 1,800-strong congregation at the service heard an address from former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell-Horner, a Royal Commonwealth Society Ambassador, and a reflection by dancer Oti Mabuse. A poem by Selina Tusitala Marsh, the Commonwealth Poet Laureate, was also presented. The service also featured the world premiere of the Commonwealth Symphony, a collaboration blending classical ballet and Bollywood. Additional musical contributions came from a traditional Scottish Ceilidh band and the Melodians Steel Drum Orchestra.
Emphasizing Commonwealth Unity
The event gathered government representatives, young people, and creative leaders, emphasizing the Commonwealth's role in harmonizing diverse voices from its 56 member nations and 2.7 billion people. The theme was inspired by the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026 theme of 'Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth'.
BBC Drops Live Broadcast
For the first time since 1989, the BBC did not broadcast the Commonwealth Day service, citing "funding challenges" as the reason. Instead, an episode of "Escape to the Country" aired during the service's traditional broadcast slot. BBC News confirmed plans to cover the service across its other platforms.
King Charles's Message: 'A Force for Good'
King Charles also released a message for Commonwealth Day, focusing on the organization's role as a "force for good" amidst global challenges. His speech highlighted the Commonwealth's enduring spirit in times of conflict, climate change, and rapid transformation, emphasizing collective action for restorative sustainability and global care.
