Scientists are investigating period blood as a source of information for women's health, potentially revealing insights into conditions such as endometriosis, cervical cancer, diabetes, and vitamin D deficiency.

The Research Initiative

Biotech startup NextGen Jane, based in Oakland, California, is actively collecting period blood samples for research. In 2023, Emma Backlund, a 27-year-old graduate student, participated in this initiative by providing eight tampons from one menstrual cycle.

A Personal Struggle: The Diagnostic Challenge

Backlund's experience highlights the pervasive challenges often faced in diagnosing certain conditions. She suffered from severe menstrual pain starting at age 11, experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and missing social activities and school due to intense pain.

It took Backlund 13 years to receive a diagnosis of endometriosis.

Understanding Endometriosis

This chronic disorder involves the growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus.

Endometriosis affects an estimated 190 million people globally, approximately one-tenth of women of reproductive age, leading to symptoms like heavy periods, severe pelvic pain, bladder or bowel issues, and infertility.
