Diverse Discoveries from the Latest Cohort

The latest cohort included eight students who completed projects on various topics, including psychological wellbeing, diet and mental health, lifestyle patterns in autistic adults, and the therapeutic properties of medicinal plants. Students presented their findings at an event attended by staff, guests, and industry partners. The projects demonstrated methodological skills such as data analysis, laboratory techniques, and evidence appraisal.

Investigating Medicinal Plants: Irina Andrianova

Master of Naturopathic Medicine student Irina Andrianova conducted a chemical profile of therapeutic constituents in the plant polygala virgate, finding supportive evidence for its use in natural medicine. Ms. Andrianova expressed gratitude for the guidance received, stating the project was an invaluable step in her research development.

The Psychosocial Benefits of Tea: Lara Boulogne

Another Master of Naturopathic Medicine student, Lara Boulogne, researched the role of tea in psychological wellbeing. Her findings indicated that the ritual of tea consumption creates numerous psychosocial benefits, including relaxation, stress reduction, social connection, and mindfulness. Ms. Boulogne noted that the program provided the invaluable experience of being involved in the full research process.

Program Details and Future Outlook

The Research Futures Scholarship Program is open to undergraduate students and those enrolled in Southern Cross University's Master of Naturopathic Medicine. Successful applicants receive a weekly stipend totaling $2,100 over the six-week program. The National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine expects to continue supporting students interested in developing research skills or exploring potential research careers.
