Sony Reportedly Testing Dynamic Game Pricing on PlayStation Store

A website named PSprices has been monitoring prices on Sony's digital game store and identified instances where games were offered at different prices to various users. These offers are reportedly tracked in the PlayStation API with experiment identifiers, including IPT_PILOT and IPT_OPR_TESTING.

Unprecedented A/B Testing Across Regions

Dynamic pricing is a practice used in multiple industries but is not commonly found in online game stores and often receives negative reactions. PSprices indicates that Sony is conducting A/B testing on prices for over 150 games across 68 regions. The United States is not currently part of this experiment.

Even if the focus of Sony's dynamic pricing is to lower costs for some users, variations in discounts may result in customer dissatisfaction.

Current Discounts and Potential Customer Dissatisfaction

At present, the program appears to offer discounts ranging from 5 percent to 17.5 percent to select users on titles such as Spider-Man 2, God of War, and Red Dead Redemption 2. Variations in discounts may result in customer dissatisfaction.

Sony has been contacted for comment, but a response has not yet been provided.
