Netflix Acquires Ben Affleck's AI Filmmaking Company, InterPositive
Netflix has acquired InterPositive, an AI-powered filmmaking tool company founded by Ben Affleck, for an undisclosed sum. Affleck has also joined Netflix as a senior advisor.
InterPositive: AI for Post-Production
InterPositive's technology enables filmmakers to develop proprietary AI models using their shot footage. These models can then automate various post-production tasks, such as removing stunt wires, reframing shots, adjusting lighting, and enhancing backgrounds.
Broader Context and Industry Impact
This acquisition follows a multi-year partnership agreement between Netflix and Artists Equity, the production company co-founded by Affleck and Matt Damon, which gives Netflix priority for their future streaming projects.
The deal also occurs shortly after Netflix withdrew its bid to acquire Warner Brothers Discovery, a company Paramount later acquired.
Commitment to Human-Centered AI
Ben Affleck, a signatory of the Creators Coalition on AI, has expressed a commitment to human-centered innovation in the entertainment industry. The Coalition advocates for responsible AI use rather than a complete rejection of the technology.
"The partnership aims to empower storytellers through technology, while ensuring human creativity and judgment remain central to storytelling."
— Elizabeth Stone, Netflix's Chief Product and Technology Officer
Kimberly A. Owczarski, an associate professor at Texas Christian University, noted that Affleck's involvement sends a positive message to an industry navigating the increasing adoption of AI.
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) declined to comment on the merger.
