Sparkling Water: A Refreshing Edge for Esports Players?

Extended esports play has long been recognized as a demanding activity, often culminating in significant mental fatigue. This fatigue can lead to reduced decision-making precision and a range of physiological responses that impair sensorimotor and cognitive function.

Players frequently resort to caffeinated or sugary beverages to maintain focus, yet excessive consumption of these drinks carries substantial health risks, including increased chances of obesity and diabetes.

Sparkling water offers a promising, sugar- and caffeine-free alternative, potentially activating brainstem-to-prefrontal pathways connected to executive control through its unique throat sensation.

The Study: Unpacking Cognitive Performance

To investigate this potential, a randomized crossover study was conducted with 14 young adults. Participants engaged in three hours of virtual soccer gameplay on two separate occasions, consuming either sparkling water or plain water.

Researchers employed a multi-faceted approach to monitor participant responses. Continuous monitoring included pupil diameter and heart rate. Subjective fatigue and game enjoyment were assessed hourly. Executive function was rigorously tested using a flanker task, while interstitial glucose and salivary cortisol levels were periodically measured.

Key Findings: Enhanced Focus and Fewer Fouls

The results painted a clear picture. Compared to plain water, sparkling water intake correlated with several positive outcomes. Participants reported reduced subjective fatigue and increased enjoyment of the game. Furthermore, improved executive function test performance was observed.

A notable physiological marker was a decrease in pupil constriction among those who consumed sparkling water. This was further reinforced by a strong correlation between greater pupil constriction and slower responses in the flanker task, suggesting a link between pupil dynamics and cognitive load. Interestingly, heart rate, interstitial glucose, and cortisol levels remained comparable across both conditions, indicating the effects were specific to cognitive and subjective states rather than broad physiological stress.

Crucially, players consuming sparkling water committed fewer fouls during gameplay, suggesting an improvement in precision and control under sustained mental effort.

No significant changes were observed in offensive or defensive performance metrics, indicating the benefit was primarily in error reduction and sustained focus.

A Sustainable Approach to Esports Performance

These findings present sparkling water consumption as a compelling and healthy method to support mental focus during prolonged esports activities. It offers a significant advantage by enhancing cognitive function and reducing fatigue without relying on the intake of sugar or caffeine, thus bypassing associated health concerns.
