Renovation Rivalry: New and Established TV Shows Compete for Viewers
Two major Australian television networks are preparing new seasons of renovation competition programs, with Channel 7 launching a new series and Channel 9 continuing its established format.
The Contenders
Channel 7 premiered its new renovation competition, "My Reno Rules," on Tuesday, April 23, at 7:30 pm. The series is hosted by Dr. Chris Brown and features billionaire Adrian Portelli, founder of LMCT+.
The show was filmed at two neighboring 1970s-era houses in Bulleen, Melbourne, which Portelli purchased for approximately $2.7 million and donated for the production.
Four teams are renovating the properties, competing for a cash prize. The fully renovated homes will be given away to viewers in a live finale, a format promoted as a major television giveaway.
Concurrently, Channel 9 is preparing for the twentieth season of its long-running series, "The Block," which will be set in Mount Eliza. The season will feature multimillion-dollar homes in a high-value area.
'My Reno Rules' Format and Production
The judging panel for "My Reno Rules" consists of Neale Whitaker, Simon Cohen from "Luxe Listings Sydney," and interior design expert Julia Green. The prize pool for the winning team was increased from $100,000 to $250,000 after the first episode's judging.
Key elements of the show's format include:
- Weekly room renovations and challenges.
- A live finale where the completed homes are given away.
- A rules structure that, according to teasers, may change unexpectedly.
Production was temporarily halted last year after asbestos was reportedly identified in the homes. Work stopped for assessment and removal by licensed specialists before resuming after the site was cleared.
'The Block' Season 20 Cast and Commentary
Two contestant teams have been revealed for the upcoming season of "The Block":
- Chantel Green and Wyatt Randall, a Gold Coast couple.
- Tayla and Rick Peroomal, a father-daughter duo from Melbourne.
Industry commentary has included discussion on whether the contestant lineup aligns with the high-value properties. Madeleine Roberts, director at M R Advocacy, questioned if a personality-driven cast matches the market expectations for homes in the $3 million to $5 million range. An unnamed industry insider expressed concern that casting focused on entertainment could impact auction results.
Another unnamed insider suggested that the homes themselves would define the season and that the show has historically featured strong personalities capable of handling pressure.
Industry Perspectives on the Competing Shows
Television analyst Colin Vickery stated that challenging an established format like "The Block" would be difficult. An unnamed industry insider contrasted the casts, suggesting the "My Reno Rules" contestants are "far more relatable" and "feel like real Aussies with real stories," while describing "The Block's" upcoming cast as "influencer-coded."
Adrian Portelli, who previously gained attention as a bidder on "The Block," stated on Instagram that his new show was "a completely new challenge" and that the team was "here to take over."
Events from the 'My Reno Rules' Premiere
The first episode of "My Reno Rules" featured four teams tackling initial renovations amid budget and weather challenges.
In the first Bulleen house:
- Contestants Emma and Michelle, renovating the living room, scaled back plans due to a high labor quote and attempted a DIY rust-effect feature wall. Drying was delayed by wet weather.
- Nathan and Julia renovated the main bathroom and a children's bedroom. They assisted Emma and Michelle after a budget shortfall.
In the second Bulleen house:
- Mitch and Shaz's living room renovation was impacted by rain entering through an unfinished roof, damaging new insulation.
- Franky and Isaac, renovating a bathroom, discovered an uneven ceiling and had to restart their work.
First Episode Judging Results
Following the premiere, the rooms were judged and the prize pool was increased.
- Mitch and Shaz placed first with a score of 25/30 for their living room, which Neale Whitaker described as "one of the best rooms I've ever judged on TV."
- Nathan and Julia placed second with a score of 22.5.
- Emma and Michelle and Franky and Isaac tied for third with scores of 20.5. Judges described an oxidized feature wall in one living room as "hideous," while a bathroom was noted for warmth but a guest bedroom was described as lacking personality.
"My Reno Rules" will air weekly on Channel 7 and 7plus. The new season of "The Block" is scheduled to air later this year.
