Rob Reiner Honored at Oscars Amidst Son's Murder Charges

Filmmaker Rob Reiner was honored during the In Memoriam segment of the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, following his death and that of his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, in December 2025. Their son, Nick Reiner, has been charged with two counts of murder in connection with their deaths and has entered a plea of not guilty. The tribute at the Oscars featured appearances by actors from Reiner's films, while legal proceedings related to the charges are ongoing.

Academy Awards Tribute

The 98th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, included an extended In Memoriam segment where Rob Reiner was honored. Actor Billy Crystal, a longtime friend and collaborator of Reiner's, led the tribute. Crystal discussed Reiner's career progression from comedic actor to director, citing films such as "This Is Spinal Tap," "The Sure Thing," "The Princess Bride," "Stand By Me," "Misery," and "When Harry Met Sally."

Crystal noted that Reiner's films explored themes of laughter, emotion, and human aspiration, and would endure.

Crystal was joined on stage by actress Meg Ryan and several other actors who had starred in Reiner's films, including Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, Kathy Bates, Kiefer Sutherland, Demi Moore, Jerry O’Connell, Annette Benning, Mandy Patinkin, Fred Savage, and Cary Elwes.

Corey Feldman, who starred in Reiner's 1986 film "Stand by Me," commented on his exclusion from the tribute. Feldman stated that he felt "a little bit like a family reunion I wasn’t invited to" and was "maybe a little bothered" by the absence of opportunities for attendees to speak from the heart, though he expressed happiness that Reiner's memory was honored. He noted that his "Stand by Me" co-stars Jerry O’Connell and Wil Wheaton participated.

Separately, Barbra Streisand was reportedly in discussions to perform during the In Memoriam segment to honor Robert Redford. The Academy Awards ceremony was broadcast live by ABC and available for streaming on Hulu.

Circumstances of Deaths and Legal Proceedings

Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were discovered deceased in their Brentwood residence on December 14, 2025. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's report attributed their deaths to "multiple sharp force injuries."

Their son, 32-year-old Nick Reiner, was subsequently arrested and charged with two counts of murder. Nick Reiner entered a plea of not guilty on February 23. He faces an enhancement on the charges that could result in the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole if convicted. A future court date for Nick Reiner is scheduled for April 29.

It was reported that Rob, Michele, and Nick Reiner had attended a party hosted by Conan O’Brien on the evening prior to the discovery of their bodies.
