Actress Angela Sant'Albano on Her Role in Resident Evil Requiem

Actress Angela Sant'Albano has detailed her performance as Grace Ashcroft in Capcom's video game Resident Evil Requiem, released on February 27. Sant'Albano performed both motion capture and voice acting for the role, providing insights into the character's narrative, the production process, and her perspective on Grace's development.

Character Narrative and Role

In the game's story, Grace Ashcroft is initially believed by other characters to be connected to "Elpis," a cure for the T-Virus. The narrative later reveals that Grace is not the cure; she is a normal woman who was adopted by the dying Oswell Spencer and raised by journalist Alyssa Ashcroft. The actual cure, Elpis, is a separate discovery unlocked with the password "hope," found within Alyssa Ashcroft's files.

Sant'Albano stated that during filming, she was initially led to believe her character was the cure, an experience she noted mirrored the character's own discovery within the story.

Production and Performance Techniques

Sant'Albano described the motion capture process used during production. She explained that physical techniques and setups were employed to simulate in-game actions safely and achieve realistic performances.

These techniques included being placed on a gurney and being dragged by a rope to simulate scenes of restraint or movement.

Gameplay Design and Character Dynamics

According to Sant'Albano, the developers crafted distinct tones for different character segments. She stated that gameplay sections featuring Leon S. Kennedy were designed to be more action-oriented, while sections featuring Grace Ashcroft were designed to have a slower, more horror-focused tone.

Sant'Albano identified Grace's relationship with a young girl named Emily, played by Emma Rose Creaner, as the emotional core of her character's arc. She described Grace's progression from an introverted individual to someone who protects Emily. In one possible game ending, Grace adopts Emily after Emily is cured of a T-Virus infection. Sant'Albano praised Creaner's physical performance during Emily's monster transformation scenes.

Future Involvement and Character Analysis

Sant'Albano expressed interest in reprising the role in a future game. She stated she would like to explore Grace's potential personal growth and her evolving relationships with both Emily and Leon S. Kennedy.

When describing Grace's nature, Sant'Albano offered a specific analysis:

"She's not a badass. But I do think the definition of courage is moving forward despite feeling immense fear. And Grace is a definition of courageous,"

distinguishing Grace from other female characters in the franchise.
