Xiaomi Prioritizes Hardware Over AI for European Phone Launch
Xiaomi has introduced its 17 and 17 Ultra phones in Europe, emphasizing a primary focus on hardware development over artificial intelligence (AI) features.
Company Strategy: Hardware First
Angus Ng, Xiaomi's director of communications and public relations, clarified the company's current strategic direction. He stated that Xiaomi is primarily concentrating on overcoming hardware limitations.
"A shift to software innovation, particularly AI, would occur if hardware development reached a point of stagnation," Ng noted.
Ng acknowledged that Xiaomi's current imaging systems do incorporate software and AI processing. However, he highlighted that this integration is "less overtly" emphasized compared to competitors like Samsung. Furthermore, Ng revealed that previous attempts by Xiaomi to heavily highlight AI processing in its products were met with an "unenthusiastic response from consumers."
Competitive Context
Offering insights into the broader market, Ng shared his perspective on a competitor's strategy. He suggested that Samsung's evident focus on software innovation "might be a response to a lack of significant hardware upgrades."
