International Developments: Ukraine Diplomacy, Tanker Seizure, and Drone Deployment
German Chancellor Merz Discusses Ukraine with US President Trump
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with US President Donald Trump in Washington. During their discussions, Merz emphasized that Ukraine should not be compelled to accept further territorial concessions and underscored the necessity of continued support for the country.
Merz stated that while a swift end to the conflict is desired, Ukraine's territorial integrity and security interests must be preserved. He reported that Trump appeared to comprehend this point after reviewing a map of the region.
President Trump assured Merz that negotiating an end to the war between Russia and Ukraine is a high priority. He also mentioned that the US possesses ample munitions for potential conflicts with Iran and for sale to European nations for use in Ukraine.
Merz also urged Trump to exert more pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the conflict in Ukraine, noting that Russia appears to be prolonging the war.
The Chancellor indicated that only a peace agreement supported by Europe would be enduring, stating that Europe would not accept an agreement negotiated without its involvement.
Belgian Authorities Seize Suspected Russian Oil Tanker
In a separate development, Belgium seized the Ethera, a suspected Russian "shadow fleet" oil tanker, in the North Sea.
The vessel is being held on a €10 million bond following inspections that revealed 45 infractions, including technical defects and sailing under a false Guinean flag. The tanker's Russian captain and its 20-person crew were instructed to remain on board until the ship is compliant and the bond is paid.
US Deploys New Low-Cost Combat Drone
The United States has deployed the Low-Cost Uncrewed Combat Attack System (Lucas) drone. This drone, modeled after the Iranian Shahed, was deployed eight months after its public unveiling. Defense officials stated that the accelerated deployment schedule reflects insights gained from observing drone warfare in Ukraine.
