Google's Now Playing Graduates to Standalone App
Google's Now Playing feature, previously integrated into Pixel phones, has been released as a standalone application on the Google Play Store.
This change moves the feature from being located within the phone's Settings to an independent app.
Functionality
Now Playing automatically identifies songs playing nearby. Unlike cloud-based music recognition services, it utilizes an on-device database of song fingerprints. This allows for instant music identification without an internet connection or sending audio to external servers.
The feature provides automatic song recognition on the lock screen and maintains a searchable history of identified tracks.
Previously, managing Now Playing involved navigating through Settings > Sound & vibration > Now Playing. Its new app format aims to improve convenience and visibility.
Upcoming Redesign
Google is reportedly developing an updated user interface for the Now Playing app. This redesign is expected to include a more modern aesthetic, clearer album art displays, updated controls, and enhanced navigation between the song history and recognition functions.
Implications
The transition to a standalone app enables Google to deliver updates for Now Playing more frequently, independent of major system software releases. It also increases the feature's visibility, making it more accessible to new Pixel users.
This development suggests Google views Now Playing as a core feature of the Pixel experience, alongside other distinctive functionalities like Call Screen and Recorder.
