Bloodborne: FromSoftware Reportedly Declines Multiple Remake & Sequel Pitches
Reports indicate that FromSoftware, the original developer of the action role-playing game Bloodborne, has declined multiple proposals for remakes and sequels. This includes a specific pitch from Bluepoint Games. While Sony holds the intellectual property (IP) rights to Bloodborne, FromSoftware reportedly maintains significant control over its development.
Bluepoint Games' Unsuccessful Remake Proposal
Bluepoint Games reportedly pitched a remake of Bloodborne to Sony in early 2025. According to individuals familiar with the process, Sony found the financial aspects of the pitch sound.
"Sony found the financial aspects of the pitch sound. However, FromSoftware was reportedly disinclined to proceed with the remake, leading to its non-materialization."
Despite Sony's apparent interest in the financial viability, FromSoftware's disinclination ultimately prevented the project from moving forward.
Wider Rejections: Over 10 Proposals Declined
Brandon Sheffield, director of Necrosoft Games and a former Sony collaborator, stated that numerous studios, including his own, have submitted proposals to Sony for Bloodborne sequels, remakes, or spin-offs.
"Sheffield indicated that over 10 such proposals have reportedly been rejected."
These claims from Sheffield, while providing insight into the broader interest in the IP, remain unconfirmed by both Sony and FromSoftware.
Intellectual Property vs. Development Control
Sony owns the intellectual property rights for Bloodborne. However, FromSoftware reportedly maintains substantial control over the game's development. Any development concerning the Bloodborne IP is said to require approval from FromSoftware.
Sheffield claimed that FromSoftware's decisions, potentially influenced by the preferences of director Hidetaka Miyazaki, have prevented other studios from developing projects, even with potential Sony approval. FromSoftware's historical development pattern indicates a focus on creating new works or sequels rather than remakes of its existing titles.
Director Hidetaka Miyazaki's Comments on Bloodborne's Future
In a 2024 interview with PC Gamer, FromSoftware director Hidetaka Miyazaki expressed interest in revisiting Bloodborne. Miyazaki stated a desire for more players to experience the game, including on PC.
"He also acknowledged that the game is 'beginning to show its age.'"
These comments from Miyazaki have been noted in discussions surrounding the future of the Bloodborne IP, hinting at a personal interest from the director despite the company's reported rejections of external proposals.
