Bluepoint Games Closed by Sony Amid Struggles to Secure New Projects
Austin, TX – Bluepoint Games, the renowned studio behind acclaimed remakes such as Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls, has reportedly been closed by its parent company, Sony. The Austin-based developer, acquired by Sony in 2021, ceased operations approximately five years later due to persistent difficulties in securing new projects within PlayStation Studios.
Bluepoint had reportedly been without a primary project for over a year.
Failed Ventures and Cancelled Plans
Before its closure, Bluepoint had been developing a live service title set within the popular God of War universe. This ambitious project was ultimately cancelled by Sony in 2025. At the time of cancellation, Sony had publicly stated its intention to collaborate with Bluepoint to determine future endeavors. Bloomberg reports indicate that Bluepoint had expressed a strong desire to transition from its role as a remake and support studio to developing original titles.
Rejected Proposals and Resource Constraints
Following the cancellation of the God of War project, Bluepoint reportedly put forward several new proposals, all of which faced hurdles:
- Bloodborne Remake: Bluepoint proposed a remake of Bloodborne, a project that sources close to Bloomberg suggest had business viability. However, this proposal was reportedly declined by FromSoftware, the original developer of the game.
- Shadow of the Colossus Update: After the Bloodborne rejection, Bluepoint then reportedly proposed an updated version of Shadow of the Colossus, a title it had successfully remade in 2018. Sony reportedly rejected this concept.
- Spinoff Proposals: The studio subsequently approached other PlayStation Studios with ideas for spinoff titles, including one set in the Ghost of Tsushima universe. These proposals were not approved. According to Bloomberg, other Sony-owned studios were themselves grappling with resource pressures, contributing to their reluctance to commit to external team projects.
The Final Indicator
With no primary project for over a year, staff at Bluepoint reportedly began to interpret a recent Sony announcement as a sign of their studio's impending fate. In February, Sony announced a remake of the original God of War trilogy, notably without Bluepoint's involvement. Just one week after this announcement, Bluepoint Games was reportedly closed by Sony.
