Catholic Leaders Warn of Middle East "Tragedy of Enormous Proportions"
Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and Pope Leo XIV have expressed significant concern regarding the escalating violence in the Middle East, cautioning about the possibility of a "tragedy of enormous proportions". As President of the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference, Costelloe stated that the bishops join the Pope and numerous world leaders in their apprehension over the intensifying conflict across the region.
Core Concerns Detailed
Costelloe highlighted that the loss of life, the fear and uncertainty experienced by ordinary people, and the destabilization of an already fragile region are matters of serious concern.
Echoing the Pope's appeal, he urged all parties to "assume the moral responsibility to stop the spiral of violence before it becomes an irreparable abyss".
He further stated that "violence only multiplies suffering; war is not the answer and is always a defeat for humanity," adding that current hostilities have already resulted in "immense harm."
Australians in the Region
Concern was also voiced for Australians residing in the region, including those serving in peacekeeping and humanitarian roles, acknowledging the anxious time for their families, friends, and communities.
