NC Board Extends Voting Hours at Littleton Precinct

The North Carolina State Board of Elections has unanimously voted to extend voting by one hour, until 8:30 p.m., at the Littleton precinct in Halifax County.

This decision was made due to a delay in the voting site's opening on Election Day morning.

Reason for the Delay

The delay resulted from a synchronization issue with electronic poll books. Backup procedures were unfortunately not immediately utilized when the issue arose.

Legal Basis for Extension

In accordance with state law (N.C.G.S. ยง 163-166.25), the State Board is authorized to extend voting hours at sites where voting is interrupted for at least 15 minutes. However, this extension cannot exceed the duration of the disruption and is limited only to the affected sites.

Provisional Votes Mandated

As mandated by state law, all votes cast at the Littleton precinct after the original 7:30 p.m. closing time will be considered provisional votes.

Statewide Results Held

Election officials are prohibited from releasing results while voting is still underway in numerous contests. Therefore, the State Board will not publish any unofficial statewide results until all polling locations, including the extended Littleton precinct, have officially closed. A substantial release of results is now expected around 8:30 p.m.
