Christina Applegate Unveils Raw Memoir, "You with the Sad Eyes"

Christina Applegate has released her memoir, "You with the Sad Eyes," on Tuesday. The book details her personal and professional life, characterized by a raw and unedited style, which Applegate describes as "puked out" and "Milk of Magnesia for the soul."

Applegate's memoir, "You with the Sad Eyes," offers a raw and unedited look into her life, described by the actress as "puked out" and "Milk of Magnesia for the soul."

The memoir covers significant life events, including abandonment by her father, an abusive childhood household, experiences with domestic violence, motherhood, surviving cancer, and living with multiple sclerosis (MS).

A Career of Acclaim Amidst Personal Struggles

Applegate's career highlights are noted, including her Emmy-winning role on "Friends," a Tony Award nomination for "Sweet Charity," and four Golden Globe nominations. She also appeared in "Married... with Children," "Samantha Who?," and "Dead to Me." Despite professional success, she writes about a lifelong struggle with body image and self-worth.

Unvarnished Truths and Personal Anecdotes

Her editor, Bryn Clark, commented on Applegate's willingness to present an unvarnished truth in the memoir. The book includes anecdotes such as her audition for "Anchorman" and performing on Broadway with a broken foot. She also recounts her vegan, dry first wedding and attending the MTV Video Music Awards with Brad Pitt but leaving with another person.

Crafting a Memoir of Honesty

Applegate developed the memoir over three years, utilizing diaries and recording approximately 100 hours of narration. She has expressed a desire for her honesty to encourage others to share their truths.

Embracing Vulnerability: From Cancer to MS

Applegate also discusses her regret over not being more truthful about the sadness following her double mastectomy, choosing instead to portray a "Little Ms. Warrior" persona. Following her MS diagnosis in 2021, she has adopted a more open approach, describing the difficulties of living with the chronic disease, which has led to her using mobility aids and initiating the "MeSsy" podcast with Jamie-Lynn Sigler to discuss the disorder.
