West Ham Coach Nuno Bans Adama Traore From Weightlifting Due to 'Incredible' Physique

Adama Traore Prohibited from Weightlifting by Nuno Espirito Santo at West Ham

Head coach Nuno Espirito Santo has issued a ban on winger Adama Traore from lifting weights at West Ham United's training ground in Rush Green. This decision comes as a direct result of Traore's "incredible" muscular physique, which Nuno firmly attributes to genetics rather than gym work.

"It's incredible (his muscles), it's genetics. His genetics has been like this for some time now and he should avoid the gym. I’ve told him to stay out of the gym. It’s one of the things that I think he needs to realise. It’s enough weight that he carries."

Traore, 30, made a permanent move to West Ham in the January transfer window, marking a reunion with Nuno. The duo previously worked together during their time at Wolverhampton Wanderers from 2018 to 2021.

Social Media Incident and Manager's Clarification

Recently, a social media video posted by attacker Crysencio Summerville showed Traore on a weight bench. Traore has since denied using the bench for weightlifting, a denial Nuno hopes is accurate.

While prohibiting traditional weightlifting, Nuno clarified that Traore would still engage in "prevention work" in the gym. He contrasted this approach with that of 18-year-old U21 defender Airidas Golambeckis, who "spends hours in the gym" to build muscle.

Traore's Integration and Impact at West Ham

Despite being one of five new arrivals in January, Traore has yet to secure a starting position in a Premier League game for West Ham. His appearances have been limited to substitute roles against Chelsea, Burnley, Manchester United, and Liverpool. His only start came in an FA Cup match against League One side Burton Albion. In contrast, other January signings such as Pablo Felipe (currently injured), Taty Castellanos, and Axel Disasi have already made a noticeable positive impact.

Nuno's Long-Term Vision for Traore

Nuno expressed satisfaction with Traore's integration into the squad, underscoring the value of every player, even those not regularly featured.

"He’s unique, he’s got ability, pace and skills in 1v1 situations. He’s a high-level player, he has proven himself at Wolves and with the Spain national team."

Nuno acknowledged that Traore requires time to adapt to the team's dynamics. He is currently competing with players like Jarrod Bowen and Summerville, who are "top of their game." However, Nuno believes Traore is patient and his opportunity to shine will undoubtedly arise.
