Fourth Arson Attack Devastates Mackay Tobacconist

A tobacconist in Mackay, North Queensland, has been targeted in an arson attack involving Molotov cocktails thrown through its windows. This incident, which occurred between 11:50 PM on February 27 and 12:10 AM on February 28, marks the fourth fire at the same premises this year. The fire quickly spread, causing significant damage to neighboring businesses, including a gym and an electrical contracting company.

The latest blaze, however, could not be contained, causing substantial disruption and marking the fourth fire at the same premises this year.

Investigation Underway

Detective Acting Inspector Chris Eaton of the Mackay Whitsunday District Crime Group stated that police are investigating multiple lines of inquiry. Possible motivations include disputes with other shop owners, connections to organized crime, or more localized reasons. Eaton noted that the shop had previously been subject to 90-day closures by Queensland Health due to alleged sales of illegal tobacco and vapes.

Organized Crime Link Explored

Police have not ruled out a link to organized crime, which is reportedly involved in the illicit tobacco trade across Australia. Acting Inspector Eaton described this as a "strong lead." He mentioned that organized crime groups sometimes engage local offenders for such actions, and while not confirmed for this specific case, it remains a possibility being considered by investigators.

Pattern of Attacks and Community Impact

The tobacconist, located on Celeber Drive in Andergrove, was previously targeted on January 13, February 14, and February 18, with those incidents resulting in minor damage. The latest blaze, however, could not be contained, causing substantial disruption. A neighboring business owner, Neela Reddy Pamidimalla, described concerns about the repeated fires and their impact on local livelihoods.

Public Assistance Sought

Police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying two individuals captured on CCTV throwing the Molotov cocktails. Both suspects wore masks and gloves, with one observed in a black and white checked shirt. Investigators believe the offenders may have sustained injuries during the attack.
