Google Expands and Refines Gemini for Home Voice Assistant

Google has released a series of updates for its Gemini for Home voice assistant and the Google Home app, focusing on performance improvements, feature expansions, and broader geographical availability.

Voice Assistant Performance and Feature Updates

The Gemini for Home voice assistant has received updates aimed at improving speed and user interaction.

Google reports a 40% reduction in latency for everyday smart home commands, such as "Turn on the lights."

  • Shorter Responses: Verbosity has been reduced for confirmations related to alarms, timers, notes, lists, and calendar events. For example, an alarm confirmation is now "Alarm set for 9 AM" instead of a longer phrase.
  • Enhanced Alarms and Timers:
    • Alarms and timers can be set based on real-world events (e.g., "Set an alarm for the start of the FIFA world cup").
    • Users can ask for the initial set time of a timer.
    • Multiple commands can be executed in a single interaction (e.g., "Cancel my timer then set a new one").
    • Support for setting recurring alarms and timers has been added.
    • Alarms can be snoozed until a specific time.
  • Calendar and Local Information: Users can create multiple calendar events with identical details. The assistant's accuracy in detecting local weather units and providing local news responses has been improved.
  • Smart Home Control Refinements: According to announcements, fixes have been implemented for specific voice commands, such as turning off lights in a room, and contextual understanding has been enhanced. Device recognition for differentiating between similarly named items (e.g., "lamp" vs. "light") has been refined.

Natural Language and Device Control Enhancements

Updates have been made to allow for more natural interaction with smart home devices.

  • Expressive Lighting: Users can request lighting colors using descriptive phrases like "the color of the ocean" or "glow of the moon," rather than requiring exact color names.
  • Precision Appliance Controls: Commands for appliances now support greater specificity, such as setting precise humidity levels or preheating smart ovens to exact temperatures.
  • Advanced Climate Management: The system supports holding temperature presets and allows users to clear active climate modes without cycling through options.

Geographical and Language Expansion

Access to Gemini for Home features has been expanded to new regions and languages.

Early Access to key features has expanded to include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland.

  • Canadian Rollout: Early Access to the voice assistant is now available across all of Canada, including support for Canadian French.
  • Spanish Language Support: Spanish language support for Gemini for Home is available, with early access in Mexico and a broader rollout planned for the US and Canada. This requires Google Home app version 4.12.
  • Translation Mode: Gemini Live's Translation mode for Google Home Premium subscribers is reported to be faster and now supports 30 languages, including Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.

App and Accessibility Updates

  • Supervised Accounts: Gemini for Home can now be used with supervised Google Accounts, enabling children to interact with the service.
  • Interactive News: Gemini Live on smart speakers and displays now provides more detailed and interactive news summaries that allow for follow-up questions.
  • Android App: The Google Home app for Android has been updated to support Android 16 features, including edge-to-edge display support and the predictive back gesture. Accessing new features requires updating to app version 4.12.

Home Automation Enhancements

New starters, conditions, and actions have been added to the automation editor within the Google Home app.

  • New Starters/Conditions: Automation can now be triggered based on an oven's status (running, stopped, paused, or error).
  • New Actions: Automations can now execute actions such as having the voice assistant report the local weather, or setting smart bulbs to "wake," "sleep," or "pulse" light effects for a specified duration.

Google has stated that further expansion of home automation capabilities is ongoing. Details of some changes had not yet been updated on Google's official support page at the time of the initial announcements.
