"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" Reception
HBO's debut season of "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" has received largely positive reactions. A narrative emerged on social media suggesting the show's success was due to it being perceived as "non-woke" in comparison to other fantasy and sci-fi series. This perception reportedly stemmed from its focus on two white male lead characters, Dunk and Egg.
Actress Addresses Casting Criticism
Negativity on social media was directed at the casting of Tanzyn Crawford, a Black actress, in the role of Tanselle, a traveling performer from Dorne. In an interview with Wonderland magazine, Crawford addressed the criticism for the first time.
"It was intimidating to step into something that people are so connected to, love so much and have a lot of opinions about."
Crawford confirmed receiving "some negativity around race," adding, "but at the end of the day, I’m employed — and I’m following my dreams."
According to Crawford, saga creator George R.R. Martin assured her that she was exactly what he had envisioned when he wrote the character of Tanselle in his novella, "The Hedge Knight."
Crawford quoted Martin as saying, "You’re exactly what I pictured [for Tanselle]."
Crawford described Tanselle as a "softer outlet" in contrast to the "manly, quite harsh and brutal" tone of the rest of the show. She characterized Tanselle as self-confident with her own passions, distinct from other characters, despite her storyline involving Dunk.
Future Projects and Viewership Success
Tanselle is not expected to appear in "The Sworn Sword," the second Dunk and Egg novella being adapted for the show's second season. Crawford has since joined the cast of Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the game "Assassin’s Creed."
"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" concluded its first season with its finale achieving season-high ratings, accumulating 9.5 million viewers within its initial days. The show's viewership reportedly increased nearly every week throughout its six-episode run. Since its January 18 premiere, the series has averaged 26 million viewers worldwide.
