Parliamentary Exchange on National Security
David Littleproud, leader of the Nationals, questioned Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke regarding intelligence advice concerning ISIS sympathizers posing a security threat to Australians last year.
Minister's Response on Intelligence and Repatriation
Minister Burke responded by criticizing Littleproud, stating that the opposition was not prepared to handle sensitive information if it expected the government to disclose intelligence publicly in the House of Representatives. He emphasized that intelligence advice from agencies should not be discussed in this forum.
Burke further stated that individuals identified by ASIO as security threats would be subject to temporary exclusion from returning to Australia.
He clarified that while the government preferred no such individuals return, temporary exclusion orders would be issued if the legal threshold was met and agencies provided the necessary advice, a process that has already occurred.
Questions on Iran Conflict and Repatriation
Following this, Andrew Hastie inquired if the government had halted its plan to repatriate ISIS sympathizers, in the context of the ongoing conflict in Iran. He also asked if the government would prioritize bringing home law-abiding Australian citizens at risk from the conflict.
Prime Minister Albanese responded by stating:
"The premise of the question is wrong."
