Singer Tina Arena shared details about a medical incident in October 2023 that led to the cancellation of a dozen scheduled performances in the United States, Europe, and Australia. Arena developed kidney stones and subsequently contracted septicaemia, a life-threatening bloodstream infection. She stated that a blood transfusion was crucial for her recovery.

"A blood transfusion was crucial for her recovery."

"The Unlikely Version": A Collaborative Tribute to Donors

To recognize the significance of blood donations, Arena collaborated with singer-songwriter Ngaiire on a track titled "The Unlikely Version." The project involves other artists and band members whose lives have been saved by various donations, including blood, plasma, stem cells, or platelets. Arena expressed that the goal of their version was to strip the song back to its essence.

Ngaiire's Personal Battle and Lasting Impact

Ngaiire also shared her personal experiences, having been diagnosed with a rare cancer, ganglioneuroblastoma, at a young age. Her treatment involved radiotherapy, chemotherapy, two major operations, and blood transfusions. She is currently in remission but noted that the impact of donations extended to her ability to have a child and build a career.

Urgent Call for Blood Donations

The artists emphasized the critical need for blood donations, with Ngaiire stating that Australian Red Cross Lifeblood requires 1.7 million donations annually. She highlighted that only one in 30 Australians donate, despite one in three needing some form of transfusion.
