Warriors Seek Compensation for Mitch Barnett Release

Warriors CEO Cameron George stated the club expects compensation from any club signing Mitch Barnett, who was released from the final year of his deal on compassionate grounds. Barnett's release before the end of the 2026 season was granted for him to return to Australia for family and medical support for his young daughter.

The Warriors will not authorize Barnett's next contract unless they receive compensation, which could be a transfer fee, a player swap, or a combination of both.

George indicated the Warriors are prepared to be patient in their efforts to secure an adequate replacement or compensation for Barnett. He cited the club's experience with Addin Fonua-Blake's release, which eventually led to the acquisition of James Fisher-Harris.

George confirmed that the expectation of compensation was communicated clearly to Barnett and his agent from the beginning. He stressed that any new player brought into the club must provide value and align with coach Andrew Webster's vision.

Warriors legend Shaun Johnson expressed confidence in George and Webster's leadership to manage the situation and find a suitable solution, despite the challenge of replacing Barnett's calibre.
