Phil Spencer Retires as Xbox Head; Leadership Changes Announced

Phil Spencer has retired from his role as the head of Xbox, concluding a 12-year tenure in the position and a 38-year career with Microsoft.

He will continue to serve as an advisor until the summer.

Leadership Changes

Spencer's departure has prompted a leadership restructuring at Xbox:

  • Asha Sharma has assumed the top leadership position.
  • Matt Booty has been appointed as the chief content officer.
  • Xbox president Sarah Bond has exited the company.

Spencer's Career at Microsoft

Spencer originally joined Microsoft in 1988 as an intern, working on software projects such as Encarta.

Following the launch of Xbox, he held senior roles within Microsoft's gaming studios. He was appointed head of studios in 2009 and became the head of Xbox in 2014, following the initial launch phase of the Xbox One.
