Angus Bull Sets New South Australian State Record at $235,000

An Angus bull, Granite Ridge Velocity V42, sold for a new state record of $235,000 in South Australia in February. The sale occurred near Kingston and surpassed the previous record set in 2017 by $150,000.

The Buyer and the 'Complete Bull'

The record-breaking bull was purchased by Herb Duddy from Sara Park Angus stud, located in Glen Innes, New South Wales. Mr. Duddy had been seeking an animal to enhance his stud's herd quality, describing Granite Ridge Velocity V42 as a "complete bull." Its attributes included desirable conformation, strong bone structure, good temperament, excellent skin and hair, substantial growth, and valuable genetic data.

A Significant Investment with Unique Challenges

For studs, a prized bull represents a long-term investment aimed at improving herd quality over time. Despite the high cost, Mr. Duddy stated confidence in the investment.

Valuable breeding bulls are typically insured; however, insurance companies imposed a maximum coverage of $150,000 for this specific animal, leaving a portion uninsured due to its record price.

High Demand for Elite Genetics

The bull has generated interest from breeding companies, including international entities, for the collection and sale of its semen. This activity highlights the value placed on quality animal genetics within the industry.

Sale Facilitation and Pre-Auction Buzz

Elders' state livestock sales manager, Laryn Gogel, facilitated the sale and noted the bull's exceptional qualities and the high level of competition it attracted. The event gained significant attention during Beef Week prior to the auction.

Broader Impact and Seller's Perspective

The new record is anticipated to draw attention to the quality of animals produced in South Australia, a region that has historically been overshadowed by eastern states in setting price records.

Scott Finlay, owner of Granite Ridge Angus Stud, expressed surprise at the level of interest. The stud had utilized the bull's genetics to improve its own herd before the sale. The significant sale price is expected to help the stud recover from challenging conditions experienced over the past two years, boosting confidence in the agricultural sector.
