Opera Bar and House Canteen Set for Major 2026 Renovations

Sydney's iconic Opera Bar and House Canteen venues are scheduled to undergo renovations, resulting in temporary closures in 2026. These upgrades aim to enhance the dining experience and improve guest amenities.

The overall enhancements for both harbourside destinations include the addition of a new kitchen, an updated bar, and increased indoor seating.

House Canteen Kicks Off Upgrades

House Canteen will be the first venue to close its doors on March 9. Its kitchen and cafe operations will cease during the renovation period and are expected to reopen in June 2026. The refresh includes a new look and offering, focusing on an elevated dining experience, improved guest facilities, and a rebrand.

During House Canteen's renovation, Opera Bar will remain operational, serving the outdoor areas. A pop-up cafe will provide coffee each morning.

Opera Bar's Turn for Enhancements

Following the completion of House Canteen's refurbishment, Opera Bar will then close for its own upgrades. The works on Opera Bar are anticipated to occur during the winter months, with a planned reopening just in time for the summer season.

New Operator Leads the Vision

Applejack, a hospitality group known for venues such as Forresters and Sandy's, was appointed as the operator for Opera Bar and House Canteen in August 2025. This 10-year agreement followed a competitive public tender process. The new management team has initiated locally focused menus, a refreshed music program, and operational improvements to elevate the visitor experience.

Further details regarding the exact reopening dates for both venues will be announced closer to their completion.
