Microburst Triggers Dust Storm in Onslow

A large dust storm occurred in the Pilbara mining town of Onslow, Western Australia, late yesterday. Wind gusts of 83 kilometers per hour were recorded as a thick layer of brown dust descended on the town.

Local photographer Michelle McKoy observed the event, noting the rapid onset of the orange dust clouds and reduced visibility across the town.

Understanding the 'Microburst' Phenomenon

Meteorologist Jessica Lingard stated that the event was caused by large inland thunderstorms, which formed a "microburst" or "downburst."

This phenomenon involves air rushing out from underneath a thunderstorm, hitting the ground, and dispersing in all directions.

Dry Conditions Fuel Storms

Lingard explained that the ground in the Pilbara region was particularly dusty due to rainfall totals being significantly below average for this time of year. Similar conditions led to another large dust storm in Onslow last year.

Microburst events are typically short-lived, with wind gusts returning to calm within an hour.
