BMW Unveils M Performance Track Kit for M2 and New Exhaust for M2 CS

BMW has announced significant performance upgrades for its M2 coupe lineup, introducing an M Performance Track Kit for the standard M2 and a new M Performance exhaust system for the M2 CS model. These enhancements, scheduled for release in Europe starting July, aim to elevate the driving experience with a focus on aerodynamics, suspension, and sound tuning.

M Performance Track Kit for BMW M2

The M Performance Track Kit is designed for the standard M2 coupe, directly targeting vehicle owners interested in track day performance. This comprehensive kit is available for new M2 vehicles and can also be retrofitted to existing models. While the kit significantly enhances performance, it explicitly does not modify the vehicle's 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine.

Aerodynamic Enhancements

The kit features a range of meticulously developed aerodynamic components. It includes a manually adjustable front splitter and a prominent swan-neck style rear wing, both engineered to substantially increase downforce. The front splitter can be extended to integrate seamlessly with the diffuser for optimized track use.

The rear wing, drawing inspiration from M4 GT4 and M3 GT3 race cars, offers dual functionality:

  • "Race Mode": Extends the wing approximately 50 millimeters (2 inches) rearward for maximum downforce.
  • "Street Mode": Retracts the wing to remain within the M2’s original dimensions, reportedly ensuring road legality.
The rear wing also integrates a third brake light. Additional aerodynamic components in the kit include distinct canards on the bumper and new wheel-arch diffusers, all developed through extensive wind-tunnel testing.

Suspension Modifications

A revised suspension system is at the core of the Track Kit. BMW proudly states this is its first motorsport-spec damper setup developed specifically for a road-legal vehicle, offering four-way adjustable rebound and compression damping. The kit further includes adjustable support bearings (also known as adjustable top mounts) and allows for a substantial ride height reduction of up to 20 millimeters (0.8 inches) compared to the standard M2. One source highlights that the kit also incorporates the first road-legal mass damper system fitted to a production model.

Additional Components

To support demanding track conditions, the kit integrates a specialized scoop for the upstream engine oil cooler. Optional track tires are also made available for discerning drivers seeking maximum grip.

Pricing and Availability

In Germany, the M Performance Track Kit is reported to be priced between €23,500 and €25,500, excluding taxes and installation fees. This high-performance package is set to launch in July. Availability for markets outside Europe, such as the United States and Australia, has not yet been confirmed, with BMW Australia currently being consulted for local release details.

M Performance Exhaust for BMW M2 CS

An optional M Performance exhaust system has been specifically introduced for the M2 CS model, enhancing its already formidable presence.

Features

This premium exhaust system has a dual purpose: it aims to fine-tune the sound profile of the twin-turbo S58 inline six engine and significantly reduces the vehicle's kerb weight by approximately 8 kilograms (17.6 pounds). The system is distinguished by its new, high-quality tailpipe trims crafted from a combination of carbon and titanium. While enhancing sound and reducing weight, the system does not officially increase the M2 CS's existing 390kW/650Nm outputs. For context, the M2 CS model itself sits 8mm lower than the standard M2.

Pricing and Availability

The M Performance exhaust for the M2 CS is priced at €8,343, excluding installation fees. Like the Track Kit, this exclusive exhaust system will also become available in Europe starting July.

Other Related M2 Developments

Beyond these new M Performance upgrades, BMW offers other notable M2 variants and has teased potential future developments. BMW also provides the non-road-legal M2 Racing model, which starts at €98,000. This dedicated racing variant features a smaller 2.0-liter, four-cylinder B48 engine instead of the S58, a choice designed to comply with specific racing series class restrictions and reduce overall maintenance costs.

In a brief but intriguing development, a potential all-wheel drive version of the M2, tentatively named M2 xDrive, was briefly listed on the BMW USA website before its subsequent removal. This would mark a significant departure from previous generations of the M2, which have exclusively featured rear-wheel drive.
