Oliver "Power" Grant, who served as the executive producer for the Wu-Tang Clan since its inception, has died at the age of 52.
His family and the rap group confirmed in a joint statement that he had been battling pancreatic cancer. Grant was recognized for his pivotal role in financing the group's early projects and establishing their brand.

Passing and Background

Grant's death was confirmed on a Saturday by his family and the Wu-Tang Clan, who announced he had been surrounded by his mother, children, family, and close friends. He was raised in the Park Hill projects of Staten Island, New York, alongside the individuals who would later form the Wu-Tang Clan. Although not a performing member, Grant was instrumental in the group's foundational stages.

Key Contributions to Wu-Tang Clan

Grant played a critical role in the development and impact of the Wu-Tang Clan, particularly in their early years:

  • Financial Support: In 1992, he assisted in securing financing for the group’s debut single, "Protect Ya Neck."
  • Executive Production: He served as the executive producer for their 1993 debut album, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers). This album was ranked as the 27th greatest ever by Rolling Stone in 2023.
  • Brand Development: Grant established Wu Wear, the group's streetwear brand. Wu Wear provided funding during the group's initial years and influenced fashion. In an interview clip shared by Wu-Tang on social media, Grant stated that music was their primary revenue source, followed by touring and the brand.

Recognition

Group members, including Method Man and GZA, acknowledged Grant's passing on social media. GZA specifically attributed the group's success, in part, to Grant's efforts. The joint statement from his family and the Wu-Tang Clan highlighted his dedication and contributions to culture.
