Tribunal Overturns Hawthorn Midfielder's Suspension
Hawthorn midfielder Jai Newcombe is available to play in the Opening Round after the AFL Tribunal downgraded his one-match suspension to a fine. The decision followed an appeal of an incident from a pre-season practice match against the Western Bulldogs.
The Newcombe Tribunal Hearing
The incident involved a tackle on Bulldogs player Ed Richards. The Match Review Officer (MRO) had initially graded it as careless conduct, medium impact, and high contact, resulting in a one-game ban.
Tribunal chair Jeff Gleeson KC stated that while Richards' head contacted the ground, the player showed no injury or apparent pain and continued the match. Gleeson noted the majority of the force was absorbed by Richards' hip and shoulder before his head hit the ground.
The Tribunal upheld the charge of rough conduct but re-graded the impact from medium to low, converting the suspension to a fine. Hawthorn's argument that Newcombe attempted to control Richards' descent and that Richards had an opportunity to protect himself was considered, but the Tribunal concluded it was not reasonable to expect a player to drop the ball for self-protection.
Other MRO Findings from Pre-Season
Harry Schoenberg Suspended
West Coast recruit Harry Schoenberg received a one-game suspension for striking Port Adelaide's Logan Evans. The MRO graded the incident as intentional conduct, medium impact, and body contact.
MRO Michael Christian stated the action was a strike delivered with force.
Sam Durham Cleared
Essendon's Sam Durham was cleared by the MRO regarding a tackle on St Kilda's Ryan Byrnes.
Incidents Pending Review
Incidents involving Hawthorn players James Sicily and Dylan Moore, from a separate match against Port Adelaide, are scheduled for MRO assessment. Both players were penalized for off-the-ball strikes on opponent Logan Evans during the third quarter.
Opening Round Availability
Hawthorn will have Jai Newcombe available for their match against Greater Western Sydney. Will Day (shoulder) and Cam Mackenzie (concussion) are unavailable.
Greater Western Sydney faces several injury concerns, with Tom Green (knee), Josh Kelly (hip), Sam Taylor (hamstring), and Toby Bedford (hamstring) sidelined. Finn Callaghan (hip flexor) is undergoing a fitness assessment.
Essendon will have Sam Durham available for their Round 1 match against Hawthorn.
Context: AFL Match Review Guidelines
The suspension for Harry Schoenberg involved an application of a Match Review guideline. The AFL has stated that strikes, including gut punches, are now more frequently graded as medium impact, which typically results in a one-match suspension.
